Marquise Cut Diamonds

Distinct from round or square shapes, the marquise diamond, also known as the boat-shape or navette diamond, is long and narrow, with rounded sides that taper down to a point at each end. This unique cut was allegedly commissioned by King Louis XIV to duplicate the smile of his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour, for whom the cut is named. The unique shape, which directs much of the stone's weight towards its top facet, allows the diamond appear larger than other cuts of the same carat weight. Its elongated shape, meanwhile, has a lengthening and slimming effect on the finger.
